Perhaps you remember that TV show from the 1960’s, Lost in Space. The parents were some sort of scientists and the entire family, The Robinson’s, and a few other crew members are launched off into deep space for multi-year, deep-space exploration. In the process, something goes terribly awry and their intended course is forever altered. Weekly adventures ensued as they went from planet to planet, attempting to fix their spacecraft and find their way home.
There was a robot on board who trailed around after the kid brother. Anytime anything bad was about to befall him the robot would start swinging his arms and his lights would start flashing (usually accompanied by suspenseful music) as he would begin to loudly announce, “Danger, Will Robinson! Danger!”
Maybe a Robot rolling along beside us all the time would be cumbersome, but wouldn’t it be nice, from an early age, to have something less obtrusive, like a whiz-bang I-phone app alerting us ( accompanied by suspenseful music) DANGER!!!!! Don’t take that first drink! I know that person looks beautiful beautiful/handsome but, don’t date that person. Danger!! Don’t go to that party or look at that website! What you see there will enslave you up for the rest of your life! Danger!! Don’t make that investment or make that purchase or eat that tuna fish salad! Danger!!You may have known that person all your life but if you maintain this poisonous connection they will take you down a path that leads to chaos and darkness! Danger!! Don’t get in the car today…Go home now, before you get into more trouble! If we would actually listen to such a thing, it could save us a boat load of heartache!
If only real life were like classic TV programs where all the villains were foiled in one hour; all scary situations resolved in time for next week’s previews! If only scary music started playing when life gets dicey!
Most folks understand that success in our personal life requires more than space age technology warning of impending danger or disastrous decisions. Hopefully, as we age, we add to our composite of experience, common sense and have the smarts to ask questions of people who know more and can guide us through the sticky bits. There are always those times, however, that life jumps up and bites us in the bo-hiney when we least expect it! Then, a robot shooting lightning bolts would be really handy!
The Robinson’s as I recall, never made it home. They are lost forever in Cyberspace cancelled by the network before the resolution of their dreadful situation. Unlike the fictional Robinson’s we just don’t have the luxury of NOT figuring life’s problems out.
Too often, I think that folks don’t make the connection between their real-life hoops to jump and their Spiritual life. They are indeed connected. We see in the life of Jesus and the early church recorded in the New Testament that frequently Jesus would have to release people from demonic bondage, oppression or possession before healing them. Biblical principles abound establishing that financial issues will multiply when you don’t tithe. I am not promoting a prosperity gospel here, just saying that scripture is clear in Malachi 3 that Tithing brings blessing and not doing so opens you and your family up to the dark side of things.( Just as Matt. 18:21-35 relates that not forgiving others the way Jesus forgave us has tormenting consequences.) So, if you find yourself in perpetual financial difficulties you may want to begin tithing 1/10th of your income. Not doing so can be very expensive. Tithing is showing God that you recognize His Lordship.
Satan loves to keep us addicted, dependent, sick, broke and despairing so that we will perpetually focus only on our situational woes. Ephesians 5:11 calls these the unfruitful works of darkness. All those activities demand our full attention as we worry, or poison ourselves and fret. Addictions, bad habits and moral floundering are tied to constant rationalization, deceit or outright lies to ourselves and others. Satan wants us to be totally off the reservation, Lost in Space like the Robinson’s, always hopping from one drama to the next, always running low on supplies, or parts, know-how and hope. It is exhausting to always be in a reactionary- Danger mode!
It may surprise you to know that we are/were all Lost in Space. There is a God Shaped void in each of us that is continually searching for that missing something.(Genesis 1:26) We were created to worship.(Psalms 145) If we don’t worship God then we will surely try to fill that hole another way. Some folks fill it with food, or one whacky relationship after another. Some folks shop til they drop. We may try to fill it with work, or committee meetings. Others attempt to control this yearning by finding a religion or philosophy that allows good works, guided meditation and self-improvement to “keep getting higher and better” working their own way to be more “god or goddess-like”.
God knew that would never suffice. Therefore, He did all the work for us. By Grace are we saved (Ephesians2:4-5) The Lord loves you so much that he chose to make it possible to adopt you into His Royal family. In addition to redemption
and forgiveness of sins, He has blessed us with ALL spiritual blessings. (Ephesians 1:3-7) Think of that: a vast resource of heavens spiritual blessings and gifts at your finger- tips, for your use right now!
Now, that we are no longer Lost in Space but, have Jesus charting our eternal course we are called to do some very specific things: Revelation 2 calls us to be OVERCOMERS in our everyday lives. As the church and as individuals. We weren’t promised a rose garden or an easy road here on earth but we have been given power and authority and are expected to use it. No robots or tricky rocket science required, only faith and a teachable spirit.
To avoid life’s dangers, as well as ever-present spiritual dangers, we need to keep our heart tuned to the Holy Spirit and be listening to his voice and his leading. We do live in treacherous times so you had best be hip-deep in the Word of God every day!
We are given a wide variety of wisdom in God’s Word. Much is breezed over without realizing that they are not suggestions or nice ideas but, these are keys of successful spiritual life written as a Declarative, non-optional commands. Just off the top of my head, in no particular order and without taking time to toss in the scripture references:
FEAR NOT, DON’T WORRY ABOUT ANYTHING, REJOICE IN ALL SITUATIONS, LOVE ONE ANOTHER, FORGIVE OTHERS AS GOD FORGAVE YOU, MEDITATE ON GOD’S WORD, PRAY FOR THE SICK AND THEY WILL RECOVER, GO—PREACH THE GOSPEL, CAST OUT DEMONS AND HEAL THE SICK, DON’T GIVE PLACE TO THE DEVIL, BY HIS STRIPES YOU ARE HEALED,FLEE THE VERY APPEARANCE OF EVIL, DON’T BE DRUNK WITH WINE BUT BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT, DON’T GRIEVE THE HOLY SPIRIT, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER, BUILD EACH OTHER UP, WATCH, OBEY, REJOICE WHEN YOU SEE THESE THINGS HAPPENING. BE STRONG IN THE LORD AND THE POWER OF HIS MIGHT, PUT ON THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD, WITH GOD NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE!
The Lost in Space crew had appropriate astronaut gear for protection in hostile environments. Our gear, our Spiritual armor of God, is much more high tech, and useful in every situation we find ourselves. This is no joke or lame ol’ Sunday School metaphor. This is vitally important, so review Ephesians 6:10-18. Make sure that your suit of armor is totally complete and in good repair. Do you understand how all those parts work in concert? Many folks skip over verse 18 which describes praying in tongues or in the spirit as a critical lynch-pin that keeps that armor moving successfully through your life. This spiritual- unseen armor shields your entire body and assures that you WILL be an OVERCOMER and not Lost in Space.
