Flights cancelled as Japan’s biggest active Volcano erupts
Flights have been canceled across southern Japan after the country’s largest active volcano erupted, spewing thick clouds of ash high into the atmosphere.
Mount Aso rumbled to life on Monday morning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency, causing disruption to air traffic serving Kumamoto Airport, 880 kilometers (550 miles) southwest of Tokyo.
Black smoke was sent as high as two kilometers, prompting the cancellation of at least 20 flights on Monday, according to NHK, Japan’s national public news network.
At least four more out-going flights from Kumamoto Airport, scheduled for early Tuesday have also been canceled.
ANA grounded at least two flights connecting Kumamoto, which is 20 kilometers from the volcano, to Osaka and Tokyo.
The airport serves mainly domestic routes, but has connections to Taiwan.
JAL announced on its website that “flights from and to Kumamoto airport are experiencing irregular operations.”
“We found that the smoke rose not only vertically but also horizontally. The eruption could have pyroclastic flows,” Sadayuki Kitagawa from the country’s meteorological agency says, referring to the fast currents of gas and hot rocks often emitted by active volcanoes.
Officials closed a four-kilometer-wide area around the crater and evacuated about 30 people.
The agency also issued a level three warning on its five-level scale, advising travelers to stay away from the volcano.
Mount Aso measures 128 kilometers in circumference and is 1,506 meters high.

On 9/11 Anniversary: Lightning strikes world’s holiest mosque in Mecca: 87 dead, 184 injured after crane collapse
According to Saudi Interior Ministry, at least 184 more people were injured in the incident.
The tragedy comes ahead of the annual Hajj pilgrimage which is due later this month. Millions of Muslims from around the world will converge on the holy city between September 21-26.
Local media reports suggested that the accident occurred due to heavy rains the Kingdom. The governor of the Makkah region, the capital of which is Mecca, Prince Khalid al-Faisal has ordered the launch of an investigation into the causes of the accident.
The BBC reports that at least 87 people have died after a crane collapsed on the Grand Mosque in the Muslim holy city of Mecca, the Saudi Arabian government has said.
More than 180 people were injured in the accident, the country’s civil defence authority said on Twitter.
Images from the scene showed part of a huge red crane crashed through the mosque’s roof. The cause of the collapse is not known.
Mecca is currently preparing for the annual Muslim Hajj pilgrimage.
Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to arrive in the Saudi city from all over the world later this month.
Reports suggested the crane fell following high winds and rain. The Arabian peninsula has been has been hit by strong sand storms over the past week.
A video posted on YouTube, which could not be independently verified, appeared to record the moment the crane fell, with a loud crash heard in the background followed by panic and shouting.
Images circulating on Twitter appeared to show numerous bodies and blood on the floor of the mosque.
Saudi authorities began a major expansion of the site last year to increase the area of the mosque by 400,000 square metres (4.3 million square feet), to allow it to accommodate up to 2.2 million people at once.
The crane that collapsed on Friday was one of a number dotted around the site as part of the construction project.
The mosque is Islam’s most sacred site and the destination for millions of Muslims undertaking the Hajj pilgrimage every year.
At the heart of the mosque is the Kaaba, a black cube-shaped building which Muslims all over the world face when they pray.
Islam requires that every Muslim capable of doing so performs a pilgrimage to the site at least once in their lifetime. Once at the mosque, pilgrims perform “tawaf” – walking seven times around the Kaaba in a counter-clockwise direction.

For the second day in a row, Israelis woke up to a heavy sandstorm blowing across the country, blanketing the nation in yellow.
The dust storm, which over the past week has been making its way to Israel from Syria and Iraq, is being accompanied by rising temperatures. Temperatures are expected to reach new highs, with some areas, including Jerusalem, reaching 38 Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit).
Visibility across Israel is low, with some domestic airlines canceling flights for the second day. Israeli airlines Arkia and IsraAir postponed domestic flights to Eilat on Wednesday, offering passengers transportation via buses.
Israel’s Environmental Protection Ministry reissued a health advisory Wednesday morning, warning Israelis to stay indoors and avoid any physical outdoor activity.
The storm is expected to pass before the weekend, as millions of Israelis prepare for the High Holidays, which begins Sunday evening.
On Tuesday, hundreds of Israelis were treated for respiratory emergencies and other weather-related health incidents. According to Magen David Adom (MDA), Israel’s emergency medical service, 340 Israelis were treated for shortness of breath, respiratory problems, asthma and heart issues exacerbated by the weather.
“The MDA will continue to be on alert in light of the heatwave and dust storm,” MDA Director General Eli Bin stated.
Jonathan Feldstein, Director of Heart to Heart, an organization that supports Israel’s emergency services, told Breaking Israel News, “In the business of saving lives, Israel needs to be prepared anything from acts of terrorism to acts of God. This week Israel experienced a once a generation act of God that put many people at risk. Hundreds needed to be treated but it could have been much worse if our national ambulance and EMS services had not put out warnings to the public in advance.”
“Heart to Heart is so proud to support these services that answer the call when people’s lives are at risk but which also helps Israelis prepare when there is a risk to us all.”
In Jerusalem, Tuesday set a new record for air pollution levels at 173 times the normal levels. Other parts of the country recorded their worst pollution levels in 75 years.
Above the earth, NASA satellite imagery captured the massive sandstorm, showing Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula and parts of Syria covered in the yellow dust. Satellite data showed the dust cloud rose 600 meters into the air.

Has burial site of a disciple of Jesus been found at bottom of 23m-deep lake?
ARCHAEOLOGISTS believe they could have have uncovered the last resting place of St Matthew – one of the 12 disciples of Jesus.
Divers in the lake, and (inset) some of the relics
At the site, in the waters of lake Issyk-Kul, in eastern Kyrgyzstan, Russia, the discovery a piece of a large “unique” ceramic pot found with a stamp written in Armenian and Syrian scripts among 200 relics, also supports the theory, researchers claim.
lake Issyk-Kul is the tenth biggest lake in the world and second only to the Caspian sea in terms of saline lakes.
If confirmed as suspected, the discoveries support the belief that St Matthew’s relics and remains were buried on the site that is thought to have gone on to become an Armenian monastery in Medieval times.
Dmitry Gorn, director of Tomsk scuba diving, who led the diving team, described the inscribed pot fragment as “truly unique” and said experts were working to identify of the writings, believed to be Armenian-Syrian script. He said: “If that proves to be correct, it will be further evidence that there was an Armenian monastery on Issyk-Kul in the 14th century where, according to the legends, relics of Matthew were stored.”Many Christians believe Matthew the Apostle’s remains are in Salerno Cathedral, Italy, – a building dedicated to the saint.

But the Orthdox Church is not convinced by this, believing he is at Issyk-Kul.Its followers claim St Matthew’s was killed in Syria, and his followers escaping from the Romans, hid his body before burying it on the beach of Issyk-Kul.Dr Vladimir Ploskikh, of the department of history and culture at the Kyrgyz-Russian University, said: “His followers, escaping from Rome’s persecutions, brought the relics of the Apostle to this land.”Divers worked in Tup Bay, in the northeast of the lake,Mr Gorn said: “The underwater archeological expedition allowed us to find a previously unknown Saka settlement with evident signs of bronze casting production on the bottom of Lake Issyk-Kul.

Report: Analysts say leadership altered ISIS intelligence assessments
More than 50 intelligence analysts at the U.S. Central Command have alerted the Pentagon watchdog that they believe their work is being altered to portray the war on the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) as more successful than it actually is, according to the Daily Beast.
The Daily Beast story notes for the first time just how many analysts have complained to the Pentagon inspector general about their concerns. Two senior analysts filed a report with the inspector general in July, after months of internal complaints were ignored. Some who complained were pressed to retire, while others left. Fifty other analysts said they support the formal report and can back up the claims.
The inspector general has now opened an investigation to see whether there has been any manipulation of intelligence reports, some of which have gone all the way to the president. The principal complaint is that senior officials are editing the intelligence analysts’ reports to bring them into line with the Obama administration’s claim that the war on ISIS is successful. The analysts said that some key pieces of intelligence had been removed from their reports, altering their conclusions.
“The cancer was within the senior level of the intelligence command,” one defense official told the publication.
Senior U.S. leaders including Secretary of State John Kerry and President Obama himself have said the U.S. can defeat the group. In May, Mr. Obama said in an interview, “I don’t think we’re losing.”
CENTCOM spokesman Air Force Col. Patrick Ryder told the Daily Beast that he could not comment on the specific investigation, but said, “The Intelligence Community routinely provides a wide range of subjective assessments related to the current security environment. These products and the analysis that they present are absolutely vital to our efforts, particularly given the incredibly complex nature of the multi-front fights that are ongoing now in Iraq and Syria.”
He added that the reports are taken into consideration by civilian and military leadership, along with information from other sources like commanders on the ground, key advisers, intelligence collection assets and previous experience.
CBS News Senior National Security Contributor Michael Morell, the former deputy director of the CIA, said that if the report is true, “somebody needs to lose their job over this.”
“One of the central tenets, one of the key aspects of the policymaking process in the United States, is that analysts get to say what they think without any interference, without anybody changing it, so this is a very, very serious charge,” he said on “CBS This Morning” Thursday. “I think it needs to be fully investigated.”
Similarly, CBS News Senior National Security Analyst Juan Zarate said the reports are “hugely problematic, at a minimum for the perception that there is cherry-picking of intelligence and a shading of the analysis to give a much better picture as to what’s happening on the ground.”
“This reflects a lot of tension internally within the intelligence community about where things stand and what our policy’s actually getting us,” he said. “You’ve got a real problem and questions as to whether or not the intelligence community is being misused and manipulated for political purposes. That’s a major problem and red line for the administration if true.”
Offering his own assessment of the war against ISIS, Morell outlined three different fights: one taking place in Iraq and Syria; another involving other insurgent groups around the world aligned with ISIS; and the ideological fight against ISIS for the hearts and minds of young people in the U.S., Western Europe, Australia and Canada.
Morell said he believes the U.S. is at a stalemate inside Iraq and Syria but is losing the other two fights.
Editorial: Whoa: 50 military intel chiefs just REVOLTED against Obama
Written by Allen West on September 11, 2015
When I was a young captain and artillery battery commander, I learned quickly that there were two folks you did not cross — the Mess Sergeant and the Supply Sergeant. One, well, is self-explanatory, because he prepares the chow, but the other maintains your property account. And trust me, I saw what happened to young captains who screwed over their supply sergeants — somehow stuff went missing, even if it had been inventoried and accounted for.
Now there’s another group of folks you do not want to cross — we lovingly refer to them as “spooks” — the brave and brilliant men and women of the intelligence community. They know the secrets and where the “bodies” are buried. And it seems they’re leading us to the gravesite.
As reported by the not so conservative Daily Beast,”It’s being called a ‘revolt’ by intelligence pros who are paid to give their honest assessment of the ISIS war—but are instead seeing their reports turned into happy talk.
More than 50 intelligence analysts working out of the U.S. military’s Central Command have formally complained that their reports on ISIS and al-Qaida’s branch in Syria were being inappropriately altered by senior officials, The Daily Beast has learned.
The complaints spurred the Pentagon’s inspector general to open an investigation into the alleged manipulation of intelligence. The fact that so many people complained suggests there are deep-rooted, systemic problems in how the U.S. military command charged with the war against the self-proclaimed Islamic State assesses intelligence. “The cancer was within the senior level of the intelligence command,” one defense official said.
Two senior analysts at CENTCOM signed a written complaint sent to the Defense Department inspector general in July alleging that the reports, some of which were briefed to President Obama, portrayed the terror groups as weaker than the analysts believe they are. The reports were changed by CENTCOM higher-ups to adhere to the administration’s public line that the U.S. is winning the battle against ISIS and al Nusra, al-Qaida’s branch in Syria, the analysts claim.”
We had reported on early claims that this was happening here. Our assessment is that bad news is not welcomed at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The only news accepted must coincide with the prevailing political talking points. The concern expressed in our previous post is the same here — are senior military officials so intimidated by President Obama that they are not allowing the truth to be told, instead telling the naked emperor he is well clothed?
It’s very disturbing to think we don’t have ground truth about the situation in Iraq and Syria. And let’s be very honest, if this were a Republican presidential administration, the liberal progressive media would be screaming — but hey, this is their guy. So I will give much credit to The Daily Beast for reporting this story.
I hope I’m not the only one who has been questioning what’s been reported coming out of the region. We know ISIS has taken the largest oil refinery in Syria. They’re marching against the last remaining Syrian Army base in East Syria.
Now we know who’s been getting the right intel reports — Vladimir Putin and Russia. Hence why Russian cargo planes had been landing in Damascus in order to send forces to prop up Bashar Assad. So we see something coming together which somewhat reminds me of mid 1930s — the Spanish Civil War. It was there that Germany and Italy came to the aid and assistance of General Franco and his ultra nationalists against the leftist radicals in Spain.
Consider what would happen if, just if, Russia and Iran came together to defeat Sunni islamists in the region. It sure seems like that’s happening, as we reported yesterday. We could be looking at a very interesting axis — and we have not delved into China’s place in this mixture. I don’t believe the Gulf Cooperation Council would idly sit back and allow a Russian-Shiite alliance to solidify.
However, this is what happens from a strategic perspective when you falsify intelligence reports — you fail to have any strategic vision to assess the situation and find yourself in constant react mode. This is not by accident from the Obama administration, nor an untended consequence: this is intended. President Obama has little or no interest in containing ISIS or Iran. And to those of you who are saying he is correct and we should just stay out of it – there’s just one thing to remember: Obama created the mess. And his creation has now spread, by way of migration, into Europe and potentially to the United States. All this is a result of manipulated intelligence that sought to deceive the American people about truth on the ground in Iraq and Syria. Sadly, that which is done in darkness will eventually be brought into the light — especially if you shun the intel community.
If this were just one or two folks, it could be dismissed, trust me, they would be. However, when more than 50 intelligence analysts come together to file a complaint, yes, you do have a systemic issue. But, will this survive the 48-hour news cycle? Will we get some resolution on this matter? Or will it just be swept under the usual Oval Office rug?
Just keep this in mind: Can we trust the Obama administration to give us the right intel assessment on potential ISIS infiltration in the migrant crisis coming out of Iraq and Syria? Or will they whitewash these reports as well? And have y’all noticed, the predominant demographic of “folks” escaping Syria and Iraq are not elderly, women, and children…they are young men?
